The nation’s No. 70 overall recruit has been considered a Michigan State “lean” since his older brother committed to and signed with the Spartans in the winter.
However, since he’s seen a meteoric rise in the recruiting rankings, more teams have come a-calling. Gideon Gash has been one of the hottest recruits in the class, going from the No. 323 overall 2027 recruit on 247Sports less than three months ago to the No. 70 prospect as of May 5. His rise has drawn extra attention.
Some of that attention is from a source that Michigan State fans aren’t going to love.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Michigan has been making a strong push for the four-star athlete who’s considered a heavy Spartan lean because of his brothers.
As we all know by now, just because Michigan State is home to family members of certain top recruits or players, that doesn’t mean they’re going to be Spartan locks. Heck, it feels like the youngest Gash is trying to avoid being considered a Michigan State “lean” at this point. You can’t fault recruits for wanting to enjoy the process and the eventual decision. Recruits don’t like to be tabbed as leans, especially with over six months until signing day.
Gash still wants to be recruited and made a priority, and it looks like several teams are doing that like Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Alabama. Those three have locked in official visits.
And judging by this latest development involving the Wolverines, Michigan could get an official visit, too. Although I don’t see the Wolverines landing the younger brother of two current Spartans, that just adds another wrinkle in this recruitment for Fitzgerald.
Landing Samson Gash wasn’t easy either, as we all remember. The four-star receiver from Detroit Catholic Central was committed to Michigan State under Jonathan Smith, but he would never give a solid answer about his recruitment, only stating that he was still technically committed and that he was still exploring options. He flirted with West Virginia, Penn State, Georgia, and Alabama, but ultimately decided to stick with Fitzgerald and Michigan State.
It feels like Gideon’s recruitment might be somewhat similar in terms of recruiting until signing day.
Michigan State needs to lock in a Gideon Gash official visit
As previously stated, Gash has already locked in officials to Texas Tech, Alabama, and Oklahoma, but he’s enjoying his recruiting process before it potentially comes to an end before his senior year. I do think he’ll be recruited until signing day, but I do see him at least committing this summer.
If he does commit over the summer, I would think that makes a June official visit for Michigan State that much more important. Getting on campus and having his brothers show him around would be a power move for Fitzgerald and the Spartans.
Gash has been one of the fastest-rising prospects in the class and Fitzgerald has to be feeling the pressure of keeping him home and not letting him slip to the SEC — or, even worse, Michigan.
To land the third of the three Gash brothers, Fitzgerald needs to lock in a visit.
