One thing that stands out for Michigan State basketball when comparing it to other programs is the family atmosphere. Long after players leave the program, they always seem to be rooting for Michigan State and they go from players to fans. It’s pretty cool to see.

Branden Dawson has adjusted to that new role seamlessly, and you can always see him on social media cheering on the Spartans and showing his support for Tom Izzo and the program.

The former five-star also knows a thing or two about talent. He was one of the best recruits in his class and if not for a knee injury as a true freshman, he may have gone on to have a successful NBA career. He was a different breed of athlete when he got to campus as a freshman, and he was good enough to play at the next level — unfortunately, he never developed a consistent jumper.

Dawson has gone on to play ball overseas, and it looks like he’s gearing up for a potential coaching career (he said so himself on social media). But he’s still rooting for his alma mater.

On Wednesday, hours before Julius Avent’s commitment announcement, Dawson quoted a highlight video of the young recruit and expressed his desire to see him in a Spartan uniform.

It looks like Avent has Dawson’s endorsement.

Dawson came to Michigan State as one of the best forwards in his recruiting class, and now he’s raving about another forward — though Avent has a completely different style of play.

Full circle moment.

Everyone from current players to former players like Dawson was thrilled with the Avent news on Wednesday afternoon. And they’ll be even more thrilled if he can help lure Jasiah Jervis and Ethan Taylor to East Lansing with him.
