Coveted 2028 in-state WR putting pressure on Michigan State’s 2026 season

Pat Fitzgerald is going to need a big season.

Spots are quickly filling up in Michigan State’s 2027 recruiting class so that means that Pat Fitzgerald needs to turn his attention toward the 2028 cycle to start building some relationships.

With the state of Michigan loaded in 2028, it’s important that Fitzgerald and his staff develop those relationships before the cycle really heats up next spring. Getting a head start on 2028 can’t hurt, though.

There are several top 2028 in-state targets who have been speaking about Michigan State during offseason camps and 7-on-7s and the consensus is that everyone likes what Fitzgerald is doing but they’re playing the wait-and-see game. They want to see how Michigan State does in 2026 before putting all their eggs in the Spartan basket — which is more than fair.

One of the top in-state targets in the 2028 class who’s putting a lot of pressure on Michigan State this season is three-star wide receiver Tyler Trusel from Brother Rice.

Trusel told Jake Lyskawa of SpartanMag that he’s ready to build a relationship with Courtney Hawkins and “see what Michigan State’s about this year”.

The Brother Rice product is putting some added pressure on the 2026 season because if the Spartans don’t make a bowl game or the offense is ineffective, they could be on the outside of his recruitment looking in.

In-state recruiting needs to be priority for Pat Fitzgerald

Michigan State has landed some key in-state recruits in the 2027 class but the 2028 cycle is going to have to be a priority. Fitzgerald needs to do some work in the state of Michigan in the 2028 class.

Just look at some of these 2028 in-state recruits:

  • Deandre Bidden, 5-star WR
  • Antijuan Wilkes, 5-star OT
  • Donald Tabron II, 5-star QB
  • Jayden Bell, 5-star EDGE
  • Camden Noe, 4-star ATH
  • LaMarcus Army, 4-star CB
  • Mylan Griggs, 4-star WR
  • Jayden Evans, 3-star S
  • Tyler Trusel, 3-star ATH
  • Drew Sheridan, 3-star QB

All of these recruits are ranked in the top 405 nationally which just goes to show how loaded the state of Michigan in 2028. If Fitzgerald can even land 2-3 of these guys, you have to feel good about the future of in-state recruiting under the new head coach.

Obviously, the dream scenario would be something like Antijuan Wilkes, Donald Tabron, Camden Noe, and then a receiver like Mylan Griggs or Tyler Trusel — I just don’t see Deandre Bidden being a realistic option with the teams already involved. I’d love to be wrong.

The 2028 class has the potential to be special.
