Big Ten foe trending for 4-star Michigan State legacy recruit ahead of decision day

Not a great development for Michigan State.

Pat Fitzgerald may be losing his grip on four-star in-state legacy tight end Anthony Cartwright ahead of decision day on Sunday.

That’s a sentence that I didn’t want to have to write after following the Cartwright recruitment over the past month. The four-star tight end from Franklin, Mich., is fresh off an Oregon visit and it’s starting to look like the Ducks made a large enough impression on him to cut the line and pick up a commitment over programs like Miami, Michigan, and Michigan State.

A 247Sports recruiting expert (who has an 87 percent crystal ball prediction rate) just predicted that the four-star tight end from just down the road from Michigan State will commit to Oregon on Sunday.

Granted, it’s just one prediction and crystal balls are wrong every so often, but his On3 profile has Oregon listed as a massive favorite to land Cartwright. In fact, the Ducks hold a 91 percent chance of landing the talented tight end whose dad played college basketball at Michigan State. The Michigan Wolverines are a distant second with a three percent chance.

If that’s accurate, that would mean that Michigan State has essentially no shot to land Cartwright. That’d be unfortunate given the fact that he is a legacy and he’s the kind of player that would help Michigan State turn things around.

Spartan fans are going to have to hope these latest projections are pure speculation or else the No. 408 recruit in the nation will be leaving Michigan State’s backyard for the West Coast.

Pat Fitzgerald was always going to have early misses

You would have been crazy to think that Pat Fitzgerald was going to come right in and dominate on the recruiting trail. I doubt anyone thought that, but people are knocking Fitzgerald for missing on a number of four-star targets that he has been right there for.

Fitzgerald lost Gideon Gash, Reinaldo Perez, Ronnie Gomiller, Marvin Nguetsop, Myles Smith, and potentially now Cartwright to programs who have more selling points currently. He was never going to land all of his Plan A guys right after taking over a program that hasn’t made a bowl game in five years.

Fans need to be patient. If he can get the Spartans to a bowl game this year, I fully expect recruiting to pick up in the 2028 class. He was always going to have these early misses but at least he’s in these high-profile recruitments.
