Michigan State football had a pretty successful weekend on the recruiting trail, landing four commitments from June 5 official visitors.
Corado Parham, Lawrence Kanneh, Zach Forbish, and Ryan Pankey all committed to Michigan State during and shortly after their official visits, growing the 2027 class to 13. Although that was great to see, there was also some bad news that flew under the radar because the focus of Spartan fans was on recruits who were on campus.
Outside of East Lansing, three priority wide receiver targets committed elsewhere, thus cancelling their upcoming Michigan State official visits.
The first was in the middle of last week when three-star wideout Arnold Mugerwa committed to Big Ten foe Rutgers even though he had an upcoming official visit schedule with Michigan State for June 19. He wasn’t at the top of the Spartans’ board, but he was enough of a priority to schedule an official visit with Pat Fitzgerald and MSU.

A few days after Mugerwa committed to Rutgers, taking Michigan State off his board, four-star would-be June 12 visitor Ronnie Gomiller picked Cincinnati.
Those were two really tough blows to the potential 2027 class’ receiving corps.
Then another top wide receiver target, Maliek Brown, committed to Kansas over the weekend. He was supposed to visit on June 12 with Gomiller, but he decided to head to the Big 12 like his fellow Spartan receiver targets. After crossing Mugerwa off the board, the staff knew how important the weekend of June 12 was about to be with Gomiller and Brown expected to be on campus. That’s unfortunately no longer happening.
Wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins didn’t leave the weekend empty-handed, though. Forbish became the 12th commit in the Spartans’ 2027 class as well as the first receiver.
Michigan State‘s WR room is going to be just fine
Although missing on Mugerwa, Gomiller, and Brown hurts, Michigan State receiving corps is going to be just fine. The Spartans landed who I believe is a guy who’s going to shoot up the rankings eventually in Forbish and they have an already-solid group of receivers on the 2026 roster.
Chrishon McCray is going to be a breakout candidate, Fredrick Moore and KK Smith are going to be productive incoming transfers with two years of eligibility left each, and Bryson Williams, Braylon Collier, Zach Washington, and Charles Taplin are underclassmen who are going to be very solid.
Hawkins has another deep group of receivers and the improvement at tight end should help take a little more pressure off those guys.
Missing on three targets in a three-day span was tough, but Hawkins will always find good wideouts.
