New visitors are being added to Michigan State’s official visit schedule just days before they begin and that includes hosting some commits who’ll help him recruit.
The first official visit weekend for Michigan State is May 29 and I went through and identified who the most important visitors are for that weekend so we have a better idea of who to keep an eye on.
Don’t expect any Lambos or goats on the field for Pat Fitzgerald’s official visits, but we can expect some commitments.
Who are the most important recruits on campus this weekend?
1. Caleb Johnson, 4-star OT
The top-ranked visitor is the most important? Say it ain’t so. Caleb Johnson is also very high on Michigan State but it’s going to be tough to pry the Noblesville, Ind., native away from his home-state Indiana Hoosiers who just won a national title.
Johnson is ranked the No. 214 overall recruit on 247Sports and he’s the No. 26 offensive tackle. You’re going to see Curt Cignetti put up one heck of a fight to keep the talented lineman home.
2. Anthony Cartwright, 4-star TE
With several four-star defensive linemen set to be on campus this upcoming weekend, I choose a tight end? That’s right. I do believe that you could choose between any of those four-star defensive line targets but there’s only room for one so Anthony Cartwright it is.
I do believe that Cartwright deserves the attention because he’s a talented tight end with athleticism and great size. Michigan State especially needs him because that position has been a weakness for years and because he’s a legacy recruit. His dad played basketball for the Spartans a few decades ago.
Cartwright is high on Miami, Oregon, and Michigan, too, which means the Spartans need to go to work on the nation’s No. 395 commit.
3. Don Spillers, 3-star WR
It may sound ridiculous to put a three-star wide receiver in this spot when there are several four-star targets visiting this upcoming weekend, but Don Spillers may be Courtney Hawkins’ No. 2 target right now outside of Ronnie Gomiller who will be on campus over the weekend of June 12. That alone makes him important.
Spillers is a three-star receiver from Detroit King who I find to be an impressive athlete with a solid 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame. He’s going to grow into that nicely.
He’s the No. 848 overall recruit in the class and he’ll be visiting Illinois and Louisville in the weeks following.
