Jelani Thurman is near the top of my “must-haves” list because, well, he’s just that good.

The four-star tight end from Georgia is the son of former Detroit Shock WNBA star Kara Braxton who also happens to be from Jackson, Mich. There are some obvious ties to the state of Michigan here so that’s what might have Michigan State high on his list.

Thurman is one of the best tight ends in the class, ranked the No. 9 tight end in the class per the composite and No. 3 in the 247Sports rankings. He’s a top-150 composite player and the No. 67 overall prospect according to 247Sports. Who wouldn’t want a 6-foot-5, 230-pound athletic specimen at tight end like Thurman?

Michigan State is one of two schools to be on his official visit schedule along with Alabama which is telling of his interest.

Jay Johnson is trying to get the best tight ends to fit his scheme and Thurman would be just that. I’m not sure if he’ll commit this weekend with an Alabama visit still two weeks out, but I wouldn’t be shocked.
