6. Defensive Backs

Another group that I believe will eventually rise and surprise some people is the defensive backfield. These guys had a decent spring and showed a little in the open practice, but no one really knows what to expect after a disastrous 2021 season saw them finish at the bottom of college football in passing yards allowed.

The Spartans did add some talent in Caleb Coley from the 2022 class along with Ameer Speed from Georgia while bringing back Charles Brantley after a season-ending injury and Xavier Henderson also decided to return for one more year. Oh, and you can’t forget Dillon Tatum and Jaden Mangham who are both four-star safeties from the 2022 class.

That’s a ton of added talent to the 2022 roster and you mix it with guys like Angelo Grose, Ronald Williams, Chester Kimbrough, and Marqui Lowery and you have a deep group of backs.

I think Michigan State’s cornerbacks improved drastically with Speed, Brantley, Coley, Lowery, and Williams creating a solid foundation and the safeties added some much-needed depth.

This group still has a ton to prove but for now, they’re sixth and trending up.
