Michigan State football made the trimmed list for four-star running back Trevonte’ Citizen. Do the Spartans have a fighting shot here?

Mel Tucker has been fairly open about wanting to add another running back in the 2022 class despite landing Jalen Berger in the transfer portal.

The Spartans were interested in Georgia Tech transfer Jahmyr Gibbs before he ultimately chose Alabama which seemed like a foregone conclusion when he hit the portal and they’ve extended other offers in the 2022 class.

No remaining running back target may be as important as four-star running back Trevonte’ Citizen from Lake Charles, La., who recently spoke highly of Michigan State and Mel Tucker.

Michigan State is making a late push for the four-star running back from Louisiana and the Spartans have officially made his trimmed list as he cut his top schools down to eight just three weeks before National Signing Day and an inevitable decision.

After it was revealed Michigan State was one of the schools pushing hardest for Citizen just last week, the four-star running back listed the Spartans in his top eight along with Auburn, USC, Nebraska, Florida, Miami, LSU, and Grambling State.

The teams to look out for here are Auburn and LSU. Florida is an interesting one, too, because William Peagler just went there and there’s that connection from when he was still at Michigan State. Plus, Billy Napier is the former head coach at Louisiana so there’s a familiarity there.

Citizen would play early for Michigan State football

If Citizen did pick Michigan State, he’d have a role almost immediately. He is ranked the No. 113 overall recruit and ninth-best running back in the class, per the composite, and he might form a nice one-two punch with Berger in the Spartan backfield.

Seeing Kenneth Walker III have so much success and win the Doak Walker Award has to be attractive for Citizen who likely wants to see the field early on.

Elijah Collins, Jordon Simmons, and Harold Joiner are still on the roster, but I could see Citizen passing up most of those guys in carries, especially if he lives up to his potential.

What a recruiting win this would be for Tucker, but he has to push for a visit before signing day because that’s the only way he’s going green.
