It’s been a busy couple of days for Mel Tucker and the Michigan State football staff as recruiting is going to take center stage from now until early signing day in mid-December.

Following the conclusion of the 2021 regular season, Michigan State is still waiting to hear its bowl fate and that’s because it depends on what Michigan does in the Big Ten title game (a Michigan win gets Michigan State a New Year’s Six bowl).

But it’s clear that a 10-2 regular season was enough to give the Spartans some recruiting momentum as Tucker is no longer selling hope, he’s selling results.

If there’s one position that has to be the easiest to sell for Michigan State right now, it’s running back. Tucker landed Kenneth Walker III in the transfer portal last offseason and he’s turned into a Heisman candidate. That helped the Spartans and running backs coach William Peagler land Wisconsin transfer Jalen Berger early on Monday afternoon.

Berger may not be the only transfer portal running back the Spartans target this cycle, however.

Gibbs might honestly be ‘that dude’ that could take over the Spartans’ backfield like Walker did and become an instant star in this offense.

He was a former top-100 recruit in the 2020 class before committing to Georgia Tech and he had over 1,200 rushing yards and eight touchdowns along with 768 receiving yards and five scores in just two seasons. He would have three years of eligibility remaining.

Gibbs, Berger would create elite Michigan State football backfield

There wouldn’t be a better backfield scenario if Walker leaves than a Berger, Gibbs duo. Imagine if the Spartans landed both guys and they split carries next season behind an improved offensive line. Not only would they be like the Hassan Haskins/Blake Corum duo at Michigan, but they’d take a ton of pressure off Payton Thorne’s shoulders.

Landing two former top-150 running backs in the transfer portal would be a massive win for this coaching staff and it would immediately juice the offense for next season.

Gibbs is a game-changer but it’s going to be tough to land him over Tennessee and Alabama.
