Michigan State Football: 3 takeaways from blowout win over Maryland
2. Kenneth Walker III’s Heisman campaign very much alive
There was a worry at halftime that Kenneth Walker III’s Heisman campaign would take a big hit because he was under 50 yards and had just one touchdown while averaging under four yards per carry.
Walker quickly turned things around in the second half and finished with 143 yards and two touchdowns on 4.8 yards per carry. It wasn’t his best game, but the general consensus is that he probably needs to average around 150 yards rushing over the final three games to remain the favorite in the Heisman Trophy race and this was a good bounce-back.
It might be a little concerning that the offensive line struggled so much in the first half to open holes, but he’s good enough that it won’t last forever. Defenses can contain him for a half or a quarter but he always seems to find a way to break out.
On the year, Walker is near 1,500 yards and he added two more touchdowns to give him 17 on the year and he’s averaging well over 6.0 yards per carry. He caught two passes for 29 yards and I think he needs to be utilized in the passing game more.
Walker’s Heisman campaign lives on with two weeks left.
