Michigan State basketball has been a program built on hard-working guys who focus on both ends of the court and have high basketball IQs.

Jaden Schutt can be that guy for the Spartans in the 2022 class.

Admittedly, the Spartans’ 2022 class has been slightly disappointing in the fact that Enoch Boakye (who did reclassify) decommitted along with Emoni Bates. The once-promising group has gone from two five-star commits to zero and Tom Izzo is frantically trying to fill what could be a five-man class.

The first commitment could come soon as four-star point guard Tre Holloman has been trending toward the Spartans and Michigan State has always felt good about its chances with Schutt, a four-star shooting guard from Yorkville, Ill.

And while he’s not the highest-ranked recruit in the class (just No. 169 according to the composite), he is a perfect fit for the Spartans. He is working on his defense, but he plays with toughness, has athleticism, and is an elite shooter.

Eric Bossi of 247Sports even said Schutt “may be the best shooter in the class” which is incredibly high praise.

Combine all of this and you have a kid who should be a top priority for Izzo.

And then you see how he’s been trending lately: up — way up. The four-star (according to 247Sports) guard from Illinois has been shooting lights out at the UA Finals just a couple of weeks after earning a Duke offer. He has since been offered by Florida as well.

Schutt’s hot shooting touch and winning attitude make him an intriguing prospect and there’s a decent chance Michigan State will be in the running for him until the end.

What would be an ideal Michigan State basketball class?

Let’s say Michigan State does land Holloman at the point, adding Schutt as the shooting guard, Isaac Traudt at power forward, and Ty Rodgers at small forward would make for an impressive group. It would make up for the fact that the Spartans lost ground on Tarris Reed (likely to Michigan) and Kijani Wright.

A class of Holloman, Schutt, Traudt, and Rodgers would address every single position and if there’s room for one more, Izzo could target the portal for another big or wing.

The backcourt should be set for a while with Tyson Walker, AJ Hoggard, Jaden Akins, and potentially Holloman all possessing point guard potential. The wing could definitely use some depth while the post will also need a bump.

Schutt needs to be a priority to get the ball rolling for the Spartans. Maybe he could be the next Matt McQuaid-type? No Spartan fan says no.
