Not often do we see Tom Izzo laboring to get that first commitment of a class in the middle of the summer. Last year at this time, Michigan State basketball was in the middle of a scorching hot stretch of landing commitments from Emoni Bates, Enoch Boakye, Max Christie, Pierre Brooks, and Jaden Akins.

Michigan State had one of its best stretches of recruiting in the Izzo era and it seemed like he was only going to build on that momentum but it hasn’t quite happened yet.

Boakye, who was expected to reclassify to 2021, decommitted and picked Arizona State where he’ll be enrolled this fall. Bates decommitted as well and the likely scenario for him moving forward is the pro route. To put it bluntly, the 2022 class went from dream scenario to disaster.

Now that Izzo is just trying to get things ramped up again in the class with any sort of traction, Michigan State is sitting in prime position with one top target: Tre Holloman.

Holloman is a dual-sport star who Mel Tucker is also recruiting as a cornerback (he’s a top-500 football recruit) and he’s the No. 72 overall recruit and 11th-best point guard in the 2022 class, according to the 247Sports Composite. And on Friday, he got his first crystal ball prediction from Michigan State recruiting insider Justin Thind to the Spartans with a “5” confidence level.

This is a good development in Michigan State’s 2022 class.

Ideal finish to Michigan State basketball’s 2022 class

Michigan State could have 4-5 open spots in the 2022 class and let’s say Holloman commits, who would be the ideal finish for Izzo and the Spartans?

These are just a handful of guys who would be ideal additions for 2022:

It’s tough to say how Michigan State will finish the class, but being in good shape with Holloman is a good start and Schutt also looks to be very high on the Spartans. That would give the Spartans a solid backcourt class and then adding a wing like Rodgers would be perfect along with at least one of Reed, Traudt, or Wright.

Ideally, Holloman, Schutt, Rodgers, and a big would round out the class along with maybe another forward or center in the transfer portal.
