Another weekend, another critical recruiting stretch for Michigan State football.

Mel Tucker has done a fantastic job recruiting since the dead period was lifted and he’s picked up six commitments in the past two weeks in the 2022 class.

Now he’s hosting a slew of top targets in the 2022 class for officials and some 2023 guys for unofficial visits and one of the biggest names on campus this weekend is three-star Pennsylvania-based receiver Kevin Thomas.

And before you say “meh, three-star”, just realize that he’s probably more of a fringe four-star than anything else if you watch his highlight reel, read about him, and watch him utilize his track speed with regularity. He’s a burner and could be a serious game-changer for Michigan State in the 2022 class if he does decide to commit to the Spartans.

Right now, Michigan State holds all three crystal balls for Thomas on 247Sports and the Spartans are in his top group with a decision nearing.

If he has a good enough visit, we could see him commit shortly after and close out the Spartans’ 2022 class in terms of receivers — although I could see them also taking Antonio Gates Jr.

Michigan State football needs speed

Thomas fits the perfect Tucker mold when it comes to speed and the second-year head coach has said multiple times that he wants size and speed if Michigan State is going to compete for titles. Thomas is that speed.

The 6-3, 185-pound receiver not only has speed but he has solid size for a quick receiver. He has track speed and size which is the ultimate dual-threat.

If Michigan State wants to hit a home run at receiver in the 2022 class, Thomas is a must-get.
