In about a week’s span since the end of the COVID-19 dead period, Mel Tucker and Michigan State football have landed two national recruits.

The first was three-star linebacker Quavian Carter from Georgia during his official visit and the second one happened on Wednesday afternoon as three-star offensive tackle Braden Miller committed just two weeks after he was in East Lansing.

Both had extensive offer sheets with top programs involved.

For Carter, he had programs like Michigan, Penn State, Miami, and Clemson on his list while Miller had Stanford, Arizona State, Iowa State, Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, and Utah offering scholarships.

Both are out-of-state prospects.

Miller, reigning from Aurora, Colo., is the No. 857 overall prospect in the class and 79th offensive tackle, according to the composite. He’s also listed as the fourth-best prospect from the state of Colorado and he may have had an early relationship with Tucker from his days with the Buffaloes.

And while many may be saying “meh, three-star”, you have to look at the list of offers and also realize that offensive linemen are usually different when it comes to ratings. We see plenty of three-star linemen excel and become top draft picks in the NFL. It all depends on coaching and Chris Kapilovic is one of the best in the business.

Michigan State football making offensive line a priority

It’s clear that Tucker and Co. are making that offensive line a priority in the 2022 class as he continues to build from scratch.

Tucker took one transfer lineman (Jarrett Horst) and landed four linemen in the 2021 recruiting class in Ethan Boyd, Geno VanDeMark, Kevin Wigenton, and Brandon Baldwin. And now he already has four offensive line commits in the 2022 class with seven total pledges.

Miller now joins Gavin Broscious, Kristian Phillips, and Ashton Lepo in a four-man lineman class and we’ll see if the staff stops there or continues to add guys up front.
