In honor of 79 days until Michigan State football kicking off its 2021 season, we’re going to look at one of the newest Spartans who may just end up being the star on the offensive line.

Jarrett Horst joined Michigan State before spring ball and enrolled during the winter with an opportunity to get familiar with the offense and the new style after leaving Arkansas State.

After being a preseason first-team All-Sun Belt and on the Outland Trophy watch list, Horst now heads to East Lansing. He was an unheralded recruit out of high school, likely due to injuries, and now he has a chance to play in the Big Ten which was something the Wisconsin-native probably wanted to do since he was a kid.

Horst started 20 games at left tackle for Arkansas State over two seasons and was even named third-team All-Sun Belt after the 2019 campaign.

This may not seem like much but Horst has built his career from scratch. He went from an unrecruited offensive lineman from Wisconsin to a JUCO product to an all-conference player in the Sun Belt and preseason Outland Trophy watch list selection and now he’s in the Big Ten as a projected starter for Michigan State.

Not too shabby.

And now he has All-Big Ten potential with the Spartans.

Where Horst fits on Michigan State football’s line

Horst started 20 games at left tackle for Arkansas State and that’s probably where he feels most comfortable, but Michigan State has AJ Arcuri who is likely to assume the role there. Also, Kevin Jarvis can play left tackle, if need be, but there’s a good chance he’ll be headed back to the interior which is his natural spot with the addition of Horst.

With Arcuri and Horst at the tackles and Jarvis and JD Duplain/Matt Carrick/James Ohonba at the guards and Nick Samac at center, Michigan State may have one of the most improved lines in the Big Ten.

Whenever you add a guy who can excel at left tackle to play on the right side, you know you have great depth and your line is in good hands.

Horst’s work ethic, talent, and potential make him an intriguing potential All-Big Ten selection in 2021.
