Mel Tucker did it again. He landed another Power Five transfer from the portal on Tuesday when Alabama’s Ronald Williams announced his commitment to Michigan State football.

Williams joined Florida’s Chester Kimbrough, Arizona’s Khary Crump, Louisville’s Marqui Lowery, and D-II prospect Kendell Brooks as the other cornerbacks to transfer in. This may seem like overkill with five of the 15 transfers in playing the same position, but given what Michigan State lost after the 2020 season, it made sense.

Four Power Five transfers and an All-American talent from the Division II level isn’t a bad haul for a second-year head coach who lost a cornerback to the NFL and a handful of others to transfers.

But with four new guys coming in and a couple of cornerbacks returning, who’s going to start?

Predicting Michigan State football’s starting cornerbacks

Right now, Michigan State has Kalon Gervin, Angelo Grose, and Justin White returning as the only cornerbacks who could realistically see the field next season.

Charles Brantley and Antoine Booth are coming in as three-stars in the 2021 recruiting class.

That makes five cornerbacks who could realistically see the field outside of the transfers in, but Grose is more than likely going to be the starting nickel and White isn’t likely to see the field much, if at all, this coming season. Brantley and Booth didn’t enroll early, so they’ll likely be fighting an uphill battle for snaps this season which means the transfers could be the top options.

I’m going to say Gervin locks up one of the starting jobs early on and the other spot will be a battle between Kimbrough and Williams. I wouldn’t be shocked to see those two guys start either.

Crump, Lowery, and Brooks are going to be quality depth pieces who could fill in if there are injuries to one of the starters, but my best bet would be Gervin and Williams.

Any combination of Gervin, Kimbrough, and Williams would give Michigan State the best chance to win this season.
