Mel Tucker has done it again. The second-year Michigan State football coach has dipped into the transfer portal to add yet another top-end Power Five player.

Michigan State has added a reigning national champion to its roster for the 2021 season in Alabama cornerback transfer Ronald Williams who played in just two games for the Tide after being injured for half the season and he recorded a single tackle.

Plus, the Tide had elite starting cornerbacks so he was already fighting an uphill battle when he got to campus as a four-star JUCO transfer in 2020.

Now, he’s a Spartan, and Tucker may have convinced him to pick Michigan State because of the huge opportunity to earn a starting job. Right now, Michigan State is thin at cornerback after a slew of offseason departures and Kalon Gervin may be the only sure starter there as Angelo Grose looks to play more of a nickelback role in 2021.

Tucker continues to boost the talent level at Michigan State and Williams is someone that could have a huge impact at cornerback.

Williams could bring ‘No Fly Zone’ back to Michigan State football

As of May, Michigan State has one starting option on campus in Gervin with the aforementioned Grose at nickel. That leaves an open spot at the cornerback spot across from Gervin and guys like Chester Kimbrough and Williams could battle it out for that job.

Additionally, the Spartans are bringing in Arizona transfer Khary Crump and Louisville transfer Marqui Lowery. The depth has been bolstered at cornerback.

But adding a guy like Williams who was the No. 12 overall JUCO prospect in the 2020 class and fourth-best cornerback at that level, according to the composite, who also played for Nick Saban was huge for Tucker. Williams has plenty of solid experience and he played for a champion, learning from some of the best cornerbacks in the country.

Don’t be surprised if he takes the field with the ones in the fall.
