After losing a handful of cornerbacks this offseason, Michigan State football picked up a much-needed transfer in Chester Kimbrough.

This offseason has been brutal for Michigan State’s depth as it has taken hits in the secondary time and time again.

It started with the decision of Shakur Brown to forgo his final season of eligibility to enter the NFL draft after a breakout season and then Julian Barnett entered the transfer portal despite having what seemed like a bright future ahead of him. Chris Jackson and Davion Williams both followed suit which left the Spartans reeling at cornerback.

And then Mel Tucker decided to put a band-aid over this wound with an impressive addition in the transfer portal.

On Friday, the Spartans landed former four-star prospect (on Rivals) and Florida transfer Chester Kimbrough.

Kimbrough had an impressive list of offers out of high school with Florida, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Texas, Michigan and Georgia, so you know the talent is there. He didn’t play as much as he hoped in two seasons with the Gators, appearing in 11 games and recording 15 total tackles and three pass deflections, leading to his transfer.

But he has the tools to be a good Big Ten cornerback and could actually see the field immediately for the Spartans, starting on the opposite side of Kalon Gervin with Angelo Grose at nickel.

In his commitment video, Kimbrough said, “I like competition so Michigan State’s where it’s at.” That’s exactly what you want to hear as a head coach — a guy who’s ready to come in and earn his spot and not expect it to be given to him. He also said he liked the program Michigan State is building and it’s moving in the right direction.

The 5-11, 170-pound corner from New Orleans should be able to compete for a starting spot this fall and don’t be surprised if he wins a job with the ones with the depth lacking in the defensive backfield.

This was a monster get for Tucker.
