Michigan State football picked up a commitment from the fourth-best offensive tackle at the JUCO level in Brandon Baldwin on Monday.

In the span of one hour on Monday, Michigan State landed two commitments. Rayshaun Benny’s regularly-scheduled pledge for 3 p.m. ET was expected to favor the Spartans, but Brandon Baldwin’s commitment came out of nowhere less than an hour later.

Even after a 49-7 loss to Iowa over the weekend, the Spartans can’t help but pick up recruiting steam potentially stemming from an upset win over Michigan last week.

If you love offensive tackles with size, you’re going to love Baldwin. Just one day after landing three-star 2022 lineman Kristian Phillips who stands 6-5 and 330 pounds, the Spartans added a 6-foot-7, 315-pounder from the JUCO ranks.

Baldwin began trending toward the Spartans a couple of months ago and then received two more Crystal Balls over the past couple of days.

The Independence C.C. prospect is ranked the No. 44 prospect at the JUCO level and the fourth-best offensive tackle at that level, according to 247Sports. He also held a Big Ten offer from Maryland but the Spartans made the early move for the Southfield, Mich., area native.

Michigan State needs to work on its offensive line and Chris Kapilovic is continuing to add some size to that group. As we’ve seen this season, he needs his guys in place for the line to make progress because the current roster is struggling to live up to his expectations. It starts with size and then he can get them acclimated to the scheme.

Soon Michigan State is going to be one of the biggest and most athletic teams in the Big Ten.
