Michigan State Football: Courtney Hawkins would be ideal hire for WR coach
Michigan State football is still finalizing its coaching staff and there have been rumors about Courtney Hawkins joining the Spartans.
With Mark Dantonio’s retirement, Terrence Samuel decided it was time for him to move on, taking a job with UNLV. Though he was moved to the defensive side of the ball in 2019 from receivers coach, he was an option that Michigan State would have had for the job moving forward.
And then Don Treadwell also moved on as Mel Tucker didn’t retain any staff member from the offensive side of the ball.
So far, it looks like Jay Johnson will be offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and Chris Kapilovic will be the offensive line coach.
And then rumors started to circulate early this week about the staff adding a familiar face in Michigan State receiver great Courtney Hawkins as a receivers coach.
Nothing is official and the staff may not be finalized this week, but this would be a perfect addition to the staff as he’s someone former players and fans have wanted on the staff for years. He’s credited for turning around a dying Flint Beecher football program as the head coach and athletic director and relates to his players while expecting the best from them.
Don’t believe me? Just watch this video.
Hawkins is one of Michigan State’s all-time leading receivers and spent time in the NFL and that’s the exact thing that could help relate to recruits and players. Plus, he’s an old-school guy who expects his players to be great students both on and off the field.
Moreover, this could help Michigan State recruit much better in the state of Michigan which is something that has separated the Wolverines from the Spartans.
Tucker continues to make big moves (assuming this is true) and he’s doing what should have been done years ago.
