Michigan State football hired an offensive coordinator on Monday in Jay Johnson who was at Colorado and Georgia. Jake Fromm thinks highly of him.

In the process of filling out his coaching staff, Mel Tucker has been hard at work trying to piece together the ideal group of guys to lead Michigan State football in 2020 and beyond.

It all started with the retainment of Mike Tressel and Ron Burton and then the official hire of offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic. There have also been rumors circulating about Harlon Barnett, potentially Steve Clinkscale and Courtney Hawkins, but Jay Johnson has been all but confirmed as the Spartans’ next offensive coordinator.

After spending a couple of years as the offensive analyst for quality control at Georgia, Tucker brought him to Boulder to be the offensive coordinator at Colorado.

The hire may not seem all that impressive when you look at how underwhelming the Buffaloes’ offense was in 2019 during a 5-7 campaign, but you have to keep in mind that Colorado improved drastically from 2018. In fact, they were ranked 85th on offense in the SP+ the year before Tucker and Johnson got there and then moved up to 51st in 2019.

Michigan State’s offense could use a ton of help and Johnson should improve it in year one because, well, there are talented pieces to work with.

It’s hard to get excited for a hire that no one truly knows much about, but Johnson earned some lofty praise from former Georgia quarterback, and future NFL draft pick, Jake Fromm after his departure from the program before the Sugar Bowl in 2018.

According to Marc Weiszer of OnlineAthens.com, Fromm called Johnson the “unsung hero of Georgia football.”

"“He did wonders for me in the quarterback room as far as kind of what he did scouting-wise and watching opposing defenses,” he said. “We’re going to miss him.”"

Calling an offensive analyst the “unsung hero of Georgia football” is not only lofty praise but it should be noted that Fromm is one of the top quarterback draft prospects in the nation and seemed to take a step back in 2019 when Johnson was at Colorado.

Michigan State fans are in “wait and see” mode in terms of the offensive coordinator goes but it’s OK to be cautiously optimistic with praise like this from talented players.
