Michigan State football lost a head-scratching game to Northwestern on Saturday afternoon, but Joe Bachie is ready to prove his leadership.

Like the old cliche states, it’s not about falling down, it’s how the Spartans play to get back up and respond to their homecoming loss to Northwestern.

You can tell a lot about a team from how it responds to a devastating loss and soon we will know more about the Spartans coming off a defeat at home against the Wildcats.

Heart was missing from Michigan State on Saturday, it seemed, as well as the execution. There was no fire on the Spartans’ sideline after the Wildcats responded with a 13-0 run by scoring a touchdown of their own. Northwestern punched Michigan State back and the Spartans completely turtle-shelled.

That lack of fight late in the game and seemingly lackluster effort late when the game was on the line — as well as early — has fired up some of the most passionate players. Joe Bachie falls into that category and his post-game quote as well as plans for Monday should have fans feeling better because at least someone is showing fire.

This is what the Spartans need after a poor effort like the one they exhibited on Saturday afternoon in front of 70,000-plus disappointed fans. Leaders need to lead and this captain isn’t taking his role for granted.

Michigan State must wake up, and fast. The Spartans lost a game at home which they should have won just a few weeks after losing a road game at Arizona State where they also should have recorded the ‘W’.

It’s put up or shut up time and Bachie is going to challenge his teammates in a players-only meeting. We’re about to either see a resurgent MSU team or a more lifeless one.
