Michigan State football has gotten off to a 3-1 start to its 2018 season, but the month of October brings more daunting matchups.

Heading into the season, a 3-1 record through the first month of play would be considered a major disappointment. While that still rings true as October is here, the Spartans still have plenty of attainable goals within reach.

However, the month of October could be the ultimate decider for Michigan State. If the Spartans want to contend for the Big Ten crown, they’ll need to go 4-0 this month, beating Northwestern, Penn State, Michigan and Purdue. It’s not going to be easy, but this team has the talent to pull off four straight victories and head into November 7-1.

The month of October is upon us, so let’s conjure up some of the boldest predictions.

5. Matt Dotson becomes focal point of offense

This may be the boldest prediction of the bunch, especially since the tight ends have a combined two catches for 17 yards and a touchdown on the season. Neither Matt Sokol nor Matt Dotson have had much of a role in the offense to this point, but that’ll all change as the calendar turns over.

Dotson, a sophomore with star potential, has been targeted multiple times, but his only catch was a six-yard touchdown reception against Indiana and he’ll build on that.

Brian Lewerke has to know what kind of talent he has at tight end and he’s going to wake up, taking advantage of that. A good tight end is a quarterback’s best friend and Dotson and Lewerke will be extremely close over the next month, finally getting on track.

Any prediction would be an improvement, but we’ll see Dotson really become a top target for Lewerke this month, especially with Cody White out and Jalen Nailor and Cam Chambers overcoming injuries.

The less targets he has at receiver, the more he’s likely to focus on the stud tight end.
