Has there been a more hyped quarterback in East Lansing than Brian Lewerke heading into his junior season with the Spartans? Connor Cook and Kirk Cousins were up there, but the dual-threat ability of the Arizona-native set him apart and everyone expected a monster season from the junior.

Lewerke’s first four games have been a roller-coaster. Against Utah State and Arizona State he was accurate and passes for 601 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions, but didn’t showcase much of his running ability. He looked confident, even though the red zone offense sputtered — he threw an interception in the end zone against the Sun Devils.

In the last two games of September, Lewerke looked less than confident. He completed 30-of-50 passes for 398 yards with two touchdowns and three picks. He ran more effectively, but his accuracy was off with some of his receivers. He also can’t seem to get on the same page with his tight ends.

Michigan State will go only as far as Lewerke takes it. If he’s not on his game, the rest of the offense suffers and you’ve seen that sporadically through the first four games of the season.

The ‘B’ grade is fair, considering many fans would give him a much lower score, but he’s done much more good than bad.
