Quarterback: B+

Some might be down on Brian Lewerke after his performance against Arizona State, but not me. The junior quarterback was one of the lone bright spots for Michigan State on Saturday and he made life hard for the Sun Devils’ secondary.

In fact, he made some impressive throws on the run and hit his receivers on the money while scrambling for his life. There’s something to be said about a quarterback who doesn’t have much of a line in front of him making plays for the offense and keeping his team in the game.

Lewerke finished with 314 yards and a touchdown with one interception coming in the first half on a tipped pass in the end zone. If he had hit Matt Dotson on the numbers, the Spartans would have taken a 10-0 lead into the half, but he would admit the interception was on him. That could have been a big turning point.

Besides that one poor throw, Lewerke made just one more questionable throw in the second half that I can remember on a roll-out pass to Felton Davis III which was nearly picked off.

It’s time to stop blaming Lewerke for this loss as he played well against the Sun Devils on a 100-degree night when he didn’t have much blocking in front of him or a run game behind him.
