The week of June 18 was a big one for Michigan State football recruiting in terms of both good news and bad. The weekly roundup covers it all.

It was a busy week for Mark Dantonio and the Michigan State staff. There were some ups and definitely some downs, but in the end, the Spartans came out on top in one of the biggest recruiting battles in recent memory (Devontae Dobbs).

However, losing Dwan Mathis to Ohio State hurts. The recruiting board has been reset, especially at the quarterback position in 2019.

What else took place in the week of June 18-24?

Devontae Dobbs picks MSU

In arguably the biggest recruiting win of his tenure, Mark Dantonio secured a commitment from five-star offensive tackle Devontae Dobbs from Belleville on Monday evening.

Dobbs is the No. 13 player in the 2019 class and third-best offensive tackle, per 247Sports. He becomes Michigan State’s 11th commit in the class and Dantonio’s highest-rated pledge ever.

Dwan Mathis flips commitment to Ohio State

Yes, the news sent shockwaves through East Lansing. Four-star quarterback commit Dwan Mathis flipped his pledge to Ohio State over the weekend following an official visit to Columbus.

Mathis gives Ohio State what it had been wanting for a while: an elite quarterback. It’s now up to the Spartans to find a top-tier quarterback in the 2019 class.

Top targets pick other schools

Michigan State had been hoping to land three-star Belleville defensive end Jalen Hunt as well as four-star Ohio defensive tackle Jowon Briggs (who listed his top 10 last week), but both committed elsewhere.

Hunt recent said the Spartans were one of his top-three programs, but committed to longtime favorite Iowa. Briggs surprised just about everyone when he committed shortly after releasing his list of top schools, picking Virginia.

Spartans make top list of Jaren Mangham

An elite in-state four-star recruit released his top schools list.. Jaren Mangham made a top nine of Texas, Texas A&M, Colorado, Oregon, TCU, Kansas, Arkansas and Tennessee. He’s the Spartans’ top running back target in the 2019 class.

It’s unclear when the running back is planning to commit, but it seems to be soon — could even be before his senior season. He’s the No. 343 recruit in the class.

Darius Snow takes visit

Michigan State is hoping to land one of the top defensive backs in the 2020 class and he just happens to be a legacy recruit. He’s the son of Spartan basketball great Eric Snow and the nephew of MSU linebacker legend Percy Snow.

It seems as if Michigan State leads in his recruitment, but luring him north won’t be easy as the Texas schools are pushing hard for him. He’s ranked the No. 97 prospect in the class.

Anthony Williams Jr. also makes it to E.L., earns offer

Three-star 2019 running back Anthony Williams Jr. has been blowing up in the recruiting circuit lately and made his way to East Lansing last week, meeting up with Eric Snow along the way.

Williams Jr. was offered while in East Lansing and could form a nice one-two punch with Jaren Mangham if the Spartans decide to take two backs in the class. He’s ranked the No. 932 overall player and 32nd-best running back in the class.

Legacy recruit Tate Hallock commits

Last, but certainly not least, Michigan State landed a commitment from three-star athlete Tate Hallock from Grand Rapids, Mich.

Hallock is the son of former Spartan linebacker and running back Ty Hallock and the younger brother of 2017 preferred walk-on Tanner Hallock. He’s not the highest-rated commit in the class, but he’s a talented athlete.
