A 6-foot-10 power forward who likes to put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket and who can stretch the floor and make shots from distance? Yes, please. Michigan State has had luck with big men who can play at the perimeter in the past such as Goran Suton, Adreian Payne and currently Jaren Jackson Jr.

Vernon Carey Jr. is a more talented prospect than any of those players coming out of high school and has the potential to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The Florida prospect has shown plenty of interest in joining Michigan State’s 2019 class and that’s a surprise to many seeing as Tom Izzo hasn’t had much luck in the past with No. 1 overall recruits — Josh Jackson and Jabari Parker come to mind.

Carey Jr. is planning an official visit to Michigan State in February and you can bet the Spartans will be laying out the red carpet for him. The Spartans’ biggest competition to land the athletic big man are both Duke and Miami. He released a list of top schools that included Michigan State recently.

This will be an interesting recruitment to follow.
