Michigan State basketball made the cut for the nation’s top 2019 recruit, Vernon Carey, from Florida.

The 2018 class has been all but sewn up for Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball, but he’s not done recruiting, to say the least. The Hall of Fame head coach has already shifted his focus to 2019 and leading the way in that class is five-star power forward Vernon Carey.

Carey, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., looks to be the top overall recruit in the 2019 class and it seems as if the Spartans have gained major ground with him.

Heck, he wasn’t even on the radar a few months ago, but now fans can’t even talk about Michigan State’s potential class in 2019 without mentioning him.

On Monday night, Carey released his list of top eight schools. Michigan State made the cut.

Elite programs such as Miami, Kansas, North Carolina, UCLA, Kentucky, Florida and Duke also made the cut, but something feels different about this recruitment. It seems as if the Spartans have put themselves in that top group and have become a team to beat for his services.

Carey took a trip to East Lansing for an unofficial visit on Sept. 30 and Izzo visited him just last week. It looks like the Spartans are pulling out all the stops to get him in the green and white.

The five-star power forward held about 19 offers, according to 247Sports, and he’s ranked the No. 1 overall player in the 2019 class. That would be a heck of a recruiting victory for Izzo and Co.
