Michigan State football will be receiving a visit from rising 2019 linebacker Marcel Lewis from Clinton Township, Mich.

Sometimes it’s tough to get a gauge on a young prospect’s talent level early on in the recruiting process, especially when some sites don’t even have a profile for him, but make no mistake, Marcel Lewis is a rising star. The unranked 2019 prospect from Clinton Township, Mich., is showing interest in Michigan State and will be on campus Monday.

Monday actually kicks off the start of Michigan State’s fall camp and there will be a number of top-tier prospects on hand. Lewis may not be the biggest name on campus, but he’s one that the staff wants to keep a close eye on.

The sophomore linebacker has been impressing in offseason camps, but he’s still hoping to land an offer from the Spartans.

“Hopefully I do, it really would mean a lot to me,” Lewis said. “I wouldnt call it a dream offer, but I think that I could fit pretty well with the defense and the style of play. If they were to offer, they would be a top school on my list.”

Although he said it wouldn’t be considered a dream offer, he believes that he fits the system that Michigan State runs and he did, in fact, grow up a fan of the Spartans.

“I’ve been a fan mostly my whole life so when I first visited Michigan State it was so surreal because I’ve always watched them on TV,” Lewis said.

Lewis stands 6-foot-1 and weighs in at around 2015 pounds, but it’s still very early in his recruiting process. He’s starting to make himself known in the recruiting landscape and he’s sure to start bringing in major offers soon enough.

The Spartans will be in need of linebacker depth in the coming classes, and Lewis is an insider linebacker that plays with aggression and speed.

What else does he bring to the table?

“I feel as I am the full package linebacker and I’m a side-to-side linebacker that can move and can make plays,” Lewis said. “I just love being around the ball but I have great coverage skills with checking the running back out the backfield.”

As you can see, he’s an aggressive linebacker who is used sometimes as the focal point in blitz packages. He gets a good read on the snap and flies through the line almost effortlessly to make tackles in the backfield. That’s something Ed Davis and Denicos Allen did well at Michigan State and Lewis could be in that same mold.

Speaking of those two linebackers, they each had a hand in beating in-state foe Michigan multiple times throughout their careers. That has not been lost on Lewis.

In fact, it’s what drew him to start paying more attention to the Spartans as a kid.

“What first drew me to Michigan State was the Michigan vs Michigan State game that has always been a rivalry game and just always been an in-school state that me and my family has always been a big fan of,” Lewis said.

While Lewis hasn’t spoken with head coach Mark Dantonio yet, he believes he will get the opportunity on Monday and hopefully pull in an offer soon. So far, all the in-state schools have been showing interest and he also holds offers from Central Michigan and Kent State.
