Randolph, set to turn 36 in a couple of weeks, has been one of the top big men in the NBA over the past decade. In fact, he’s averaging about 16.8 points and 9.3 rebounds over his career and he’s had multiple 20-point, 10-rebound per game seasons.
When he left Michigan State following his freshman season in 2000-01, many believed that he was making a mistake. He wasn’t an overly-athletic player, but he was a force in the post. His frame and strength allowed him to body any defender and put two easy points on the board. Moreover, he was an excellent rebounder.
That didn’t change at the next level. Although it took a couple of years to get acquainted in the NBA, Randolph found a home with Portland, averaging 20.1 points and 10.5 rebounds come his third season in the league.
The former Spartan spent six seasons with the Trail Blazers, one and a half with the Knicks and a half-season with the Clippers before making his way to Memphis. He and Marc Gasol had an impressive post duo, but Randolph has shown signs of aging.
