Michigan State basketball missed out on a top 2018 target in four-star power forward Brandon Johns, who chose Michigan.

There were rumors, and then those rumors were shot down. Then, an announcement date and time was revealed on Wednesday night as four-star forward Brandon Johns conceded he would make his college choice at noon on Thursday.

Everyone who followed his recruitment over the past week knew what that meant: Michigan would be his choice — and it came to fruition. The state’s top 2018 basketball prospect chose the Wolverines over the Spartans and about a dozen others.

Don’t think that this is strictly because Tom Izzo backed off, though. No, Johns liked what he saw at Michigan and the Wolverines seemed to value him as a top priority more than the Spartans did, and that’s what sealed the deal. He always said he wasn’t a lock to pick Michigan State, and he wasn’t lying.

Can’t knock this get for Michigan as it will likely make their class. Johns is ranked the No. 51 overall recruit in the 2018 class and 15th-best power forward, according to 247Sports. Moreover, there’s going to be a heck of a Michigan Mr. Basketball race in 2018 between Johns, Foster Loyer, Thomas Kithier, Marcus Bingham Jr., Trevion Williams and Gabe Brown.
