Could a top Michigan State recruiting target for 2018, four-star small forward Hameir Wright, reclassify to 2017?

Michigan State recruiting hasn’t had much success in recent weeks when it comes to the basketball side of things. The Spartans struck out with Mark Smith (Illinois) and Brandon McCoy (UNLV), but four-star small forward Hameir Wright, a member of the 2018 class, might be another option.

According to Jeff Borzello, a recruiting insider for ESPN, the four-star junior is weighing his options and still considering a reclassification to 2017.

The rest of his tweet reads that the Spartans and Kansas Jayhawks are making a serious push to add him to their 2017 classes while Syracuse, Villanova, Miami, Maryland and UCLA are all in the mix as well. The Spartans are trying to build on a good start to the 2017 class that has gone quiet.

The rumors about Wright’s potential reclassification started swirling last week and they intensified when Michigan State extended him an offer. He is one of the nation’s top recruits for 2018, ranked No. 29 overall by 247Sports, and could be a nice piece to the title puzzle for Michigan State in 2017-18.

Michigan State is in desperate need for another wing and if Brian Bowen commits elsewhere, which is likely, then the Spartans would aim for the grad transfer market. Adding Wright would eliminate that process.

Wright was visited by the Spartan staff last week and given an offer. Tom Izzo may have talked about the potential of moving up to 2017 and filling a need for MSU. The Albany-native was the Gatorade Player of the Year in New York this past season and could be an instant star.
