Running Back

Projected Starter: L.J. Scott, Sophomore

Is there any more exciting and anticipated young star on the roster than L.J. Scott? Probably not. The sophomore running back is expecting a breakout season and if the end of last season is any indication, we will likely see it come to fruition. He finished the season as MSU’s top rusher, accounting for 699 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Backup(1): Madre London, Sophomore

The high hopes for Madre London still exist as the redshirt sophomore could see some prominent action this year if he’s fully healthy. He lost his starting job after he was injured against Rutgers. He returned later in the season, but never got much time. He finished with 500 yards and three scores.

Backup(2): Gerald Holmes, Junior

Gerald Holmes started most of the latter half of the games in 2015 after a Madre London injury and looked solid. He finished the year with 540 yards and eight touchdowns on 4.9 yards per carry. I see him as the third in the rotation.

Reserve: Nick Tompkins, Senior

Tompkins looked solid during the Green-White scrimmage, showing elusive quickness, but there’s probably no way he sees the field unless it’s in garbage time.

Reserve: Drake Martinez, Junior

Making the move from linebacker, Drake Martinez was listed on the spring depth chart at tailback. That might change before the season begins, but Dantonio clearly wants to utilize that speed.

Projected FB Starter: Delton Williams

After finding himself in the dog house following off-field issues, Delton Williams found himself out of a scholarship for the 2015 season. A year later, he has earned that full-ride back and is considered the starter at fullback. This could add a new, exciting element to the offense.
