Michigan State Football: Predicting depth chart following spring game
We will try to predict the 2016 Michigan State Football opening depth chart following the spring game.
Michigan State Football held its annual spring game on Saturday which broke an all-time school record for attendance as over 51,000 Spartan fans poured into the stands to watch the scrimmage. The White squad held off Green, 14-11, but not before fans got a glimpse of the future.
Early enrollee freshmen took the field for the first time for the public to see and it was a positive experience as guys like Cam Chambers, Donnie Corley and Messiah deWeaver all shined.
While we don’t know much about the depth chart for the coming season, Spartan Avenue is going to try and predict the starters, and the overall depth chart, for the upcoming 2016 season — at least to kick things off.
Obviously, we might be way off since anything can happen from now until August, but here’s what we believe the depth chart will look like once the season starts. Let us know if you agree or disagree.
Quarterback
Projected Starter: Tyler O’Connor, Senior
This was an easy one to predict since Tyler O’Connor was clearly the most comfortable quarterback on Saturday afternoon. He made strong, accurate throws and looked like a leader on the field, completing 10-of-16 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown strike to Cam Chambers — along with a two-point conversion. I’d be shocked to see anyone else start the season under center.
Backup(1): Damion Terry, Junior
Terry, although shaky throughout, made some nice plays, including a long run, but was inconsistent on the whole. The junior quarterback was highly-touted as a recruit, but has been buried on the depth chart for a few years, and he may have to wait another to become the starting quarterback — unless he switches positions.
Backup(2): Brian Lewerke, Freshman (RS)
Honestly, redshirt freshman Brian Lewerke was impressive despite his poor stat line. He completed just 2-of-9 throws and tossed an interception to seal the game for the White team, but he showed a strong arm and scrambled when he needed to. This kid has a bright future and he may just pass Terry on the depth chart before the season is over.
Reserve: Messiah deWeaver, Freshman
The true freshman was extremely impressive in his first action in front of the Spartan Stadium crowd. While the game was meaningless, you could tell that he was giving it his all on every play and showed accuracy, as well as some inaccuracy, while throwing on the run. deWeaver will likely redshirt this year and compete for the starting job in 2017.
