We’re getting to the point where every single Carlos Medlock Jr. highlight that I come across, I watch in awe. And here we are yet again, with yet another Medlock practice highlight.
There have been small highlights popping up here and there on Twitter over the past couple of weeks with practice clips. The clips have really gotten the fanbase in the mood for basketball season and Pat Fitzgerald’s team hasn’t even kicked off their regular season yet.
One account in particular (Michigan State Hoops) has been sharing some top-notch clips, but the one he just posted on Wednesday may have been the best of the bunch.
I’ve seen Coen Carr hitting threes, I’ve seen him dunking over Ethan Taylor, and I’ve seen the freshman return the favor on the senior. But what he shared on Wednesday evening kind of blew my mind and changed my expectations for Medlock.
I thought the freshman point guard was an excellent athlete who could cross, juke, and spin his way to the rim in crafty fashion as well as using those moves to create space in the mid-to-long range game.

It looks like he was setting up some sort of pick play with Taylor where the big man rolled to the basket after Medlock split two defenders into an open lane. He could have easily lobbed it up to his 7-foot-2 classmate, but he decided to show off some of his freakish athleticism. Medlock rose up and threw down a one-handed dunk with Carr waiting under the basket.
Who knew he had that in him? I’ve seen some highlights of him being an incredible athlete and I knew he could dunk, but I didn’t think he had one-hand-through-traffic dunk potential.
Expectations are now rising.

Fortunately, Medlock doesn’t figure to be the one-and-done type, but that could have changed in Jeremy Fears Jr. decided to go pro this offseason, leaving the keys to the team to the freshman.
After a little over a month on campus, it’s obvious that Medlock has all the talent in the world and the only thing that might hold him back is his size. His 247Sports recruiting profile lists him at 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, but I know for a fact that Tom Izzo has made sure he’s eating and putting on good weight.
Some might have those Foster Loyer flashbacks of a guy who had all these incredible highlights, but could never put it together at the Big Ten level because he was constantly overmatched. I’m here to say that this is much different. Loyer was never crossing beating All-American point guards off the dribble in practice, he wasn’t dunking after splitting two defenders, and he sure as heck wasn’t utilizing an array of crafty moves to get defenders off balance for open shots.
Yes, it’s just offseason practice, but it’s evident from these highlights and from his incredible Moneyball showing that he’s going to be a special player to watch.
