Coen Carr is one of the most impressive athletes in college basketball and could probably win an NBA Dunk Contest tomorrow if he wanted to, but he’s trying to shake the “dunker” tag.
Carr is always going to be known as a freak athlete, but he’s trying to expand his game and has been working hard at it for years. He’s improved each season even if the numbers are not necessarily reflecting that. The senior forward didn’t shoot a single three as a freshman and he was up to 76 attempts as a junior.
Even though the shots are increasing, the percentage was down a little from his sophomore to his junior season. You have to take the good with the bad. The bad is that he’s not shooting an ideal percentage yet, but the good is that he’s more confident in his shot; he’s not shying away from an open three.
Carr’s jumper was still a little clunky and not as smooth as NBA scouts would like to see.
That may not longer be the case.
While I do have to reiterate that we need to take every offseason highlight video or social media post with a grain of salt. We do this to ourselves every offseason but it’s very obvious that Carr has worked on his mechanics over the past few months. He has a much smoother release and he’s getting his shot off much quicker.
Get ready to drink all the Carr Kool-Aid.

Yes, I know they’re just practice highlights, but you can’t tell me that his shot doesn’t look much smoother and more comfortable. He’s dribbling the ball up the floor and taking pull-up threes from the top of the key. He’s shooting with a hand in his face. He’s confident.
All the things you love to see from an offseason improvement video. Carr looks like he could be one of the most improved players in college basketball.
Coen Carr is evolving into an all-around player
Two offseasons ago, there was little hope that Carr could develop into a three-level scorer, let alone a two-level scorer, but he’s starting to really resemble a guy who’s gearing up to take that next step as an all-around basketball player.
Carr can shoot from mid-range a lot more comfortably now than he did as a freshman or even a sophomore, he’s a 3-point threat and can take advantage of that by drawing defenders in and blowing by, and he’s a matchup nightmare because of his ever-expanding game.
I know we over-inflate some players’ stocks every offseason, but I really think that Carr is going to explode onto the national stage for being a really good all-around hooper.
He has legitimate All-Big Ten first-team potential.
