What does Raymar Morgan's return to Michigan State mean?

Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball are no strangers to welcoming former players back with open arms. Whether it's when all the former stars come back for the annual 'Grind Week' or, in many cases, his former players eventually join the Spartan coaching staff in some form.

That's no different during this 2025-26 season for Michigan State. It was already well known that former Spartan standout Goran Suton (2005-2009) was back at MSU as a graduate assistant. He was a huge part of the 2009 national runner-Up team in Detroit.

As was Raymar Morgan. And while Suton is a full-time staff member right now for the Spartans, Morgan has also found his way back to the Michigan State bench.

Raymar is back in East Lansing finally finishing his college degree, after some pushing from his wife. Or that's at least what Izzo admitted when he was recently asked at his weekly radio show, about Morgan being seen behind the bench.

Raymar is officially labeled a student assistant coach. It's certainly a good start, and he can just look to other former Spartan standouts as examples who got a great start in coaching under the Hall of Famer’s guidance. The list seems pretty endless in East Lansing: Tum Tum Nairn, Austin Thornton, Mark Montgomery, the list goes on and on. It's clear that Morgan is another welcome addition to help the 2025-26 team.

This is a hungry group, and you can tell that having Raymar back around the program, just like Suton, is only going to help — especially with rebounding. Jaxon Kohler and Carson Cooper are having huge senior seasons on the glass.

Who wouldn't want to work with Suton and Morgan? Both were pivotal players during their time in the green and white.

After playing 13 seasons professionally, going into coaching isn't a bad thing, especially when you can help your alma mater and get to work with your old coach. It's just another reason why once you are part of the Michigan State basketball family, you never leave.

Welcome home, Raymar.
