While the college basketball season has been over for 1.5 months, hoops never stop for some of the top high school prospects in the nation. That includes some priority targets for Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball.

When the high school season ends, that means that offseason circuits begin like the Nike EYBL which took place over the weekend and featured some Spartan targets.

One of those targets was Jaxson Davis, a top-50 point guard in the 2027 class. He recently spoke about his interest in Michigan State, which seems to be budding, and now he’s standing out at an event with dozens of elite prospects from around the country and from the 2027 and 2028 classes.

The other was Cayden Daughtry who’s a newer name on the radar. The five-star point guard from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is ranked the No. 18 prospect in the 2027 class and he’s actually being heavily pursued by Ben McCollum and Iowa. It’s weird to see the Hawkeyes in on one of these high-profile recruitments but Michigan State has some ground to make up if it’s actually interested.

Brandon Ramsey, who covered the event, named his standouts from Sunday’s Nike EYBL Session III and both Davis and Daughtry were named.

It’s unclear what the interest level is on Daughtry. Izzo sent some coaches to watch him play recently but the Spartans keep everything under wraps so it’s impossible to say if things have even progressed past that. As for Davis, he mentioned Michigan State as one of the top teams in his recruitment last month.

What is clear is the fact that Izzo wants an elite point guard in 2027.

With Jeremy Fears Jr. likely gone after next season, Izzo is trying to set up his backcourt for the next few years and he wants to add an elite point guard to complement Carlos Medlock Jr.

Davis and Daughtry both qualify as elite point guards and Izzo has also been reaching out to five-star Nasir Anderson who’s the No. 2 point guard in the 2027 class. The Spartans are in the mix for at least three of the top 11 point guards in the country which just goes to show that Izzo is still not even considering retirement. He’s trying to find the point guard to help lead him to No. 2.

While that very well may be Fears, if he returns for the 2026-27 season, or Medlock, he’s willing to add another elite point guard to the mix in order to make that push.

Davis feels like the most realistic option and you really can’t go wrong with the No. 11 point guard in the nation who stood out at an event with dozens of elite prospects. Anderson may be the pipe dream, however. It’s still early, but I’d guess that Izzo lands his first 2027 commitment this summer.
