Words cannot describe just how much Michigan State football needs official visit season to begin.
The Spartans have been stuck on four commitments in the 2026 class for about three months now and they rank No. 61 in the country as a program this cycle. That's not exactly what you'd call "killing it" on the recruiting trail, but Jonathan Smith has a few months to right the ship.
Kayd Coffman, Eddie Whiting, Eli Bickel, and Joey Caudill are the only commits in the 2026 class so far, but the Spartans are hoping to add one more on Friday in the form of four-star running back Kory Amachree -- Kansas is pushing hard, however.
Another top target that could improve this 2026 class is three-star offensive lineman Khalief Canty Jr. from Detroit Cass Tech.
On Tuesday, he teased a potential top three (he didn't label it as such) with Michigan State, Missouri, and Pitt, stating that his recruitment is 100 percent open and he has only two official visits planned.
Fortunately, one of those official visits is to Michigan State on June 13. The other is to Missouri a week later on June 20. That means that those two programs are likely the top contenders with the best chances to land the Detroit-based prospect.
Canty is a 6-foot-5, 305-pound lineman from powerhouse Cass Tech in Detroit and he holds 20 offers including Alabama, Auburn, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. His offer sheet is fantastic which is sometimes even more important than recruiting rankings.
Speaking of recruiting rankings, he's listed as the No. 437 overall recruit in the class (right on the border of four-star status) as well as the No. 40 interior offensive lineman (projected on the interior at the next level) and ninth-best in-state prospect, per 247Sports.
Michigan State needs to close strong here.
