Tom Izzo upsets Michigan fans, media with a simple quote about tampering

Weird, Dusty May wasn’t even mentioned.

There aren’t many people who can upset the entire Michigan fanbase quite like Tom Izzo. It feels like every time Michigan State’s head coach speaks, Michigan fans and media members try to spin his words to try and make him look bad — or they just get offended by what he says.

Izzo is a straight-shooter which is why he’s so well-liked around college basketball. He’s not just going to tell you what you want to hear, he’s going to tell you what’s on his mind.

On Thursday evening, he really riled up the masses of Michigan fans with a simple quote about tampering.

Jim Comparoni of SpartanMag quoted Izzo saying what his one rule change would be.

Michigan fans immediately took offense to this quote. I wonder why that is. Without even mentioning a coach’s name or a program, Izzo got Michigan fans and even some media members to admit en masse that Dusty May might just be guilty of tampering.

All Izzo said was that he would change the rules so tampering wouldn’t be as widespread as it currently is. There are coaches who reach out to players during the season every single year to try and build future rosters and that’s hurting the sport. It’s not a good look when a guy enters the transfer portal with a “do not contact” tag and then commits to a school a day or two later.

That’s all Izzo is saying, yet Michigan fans and media members are taking offense to it without Dusty even being mentioned.

Weird.

Tom Izzo is absolutely right about tampering

Look, I get it, to play the game today, you kind of have to get down and dirty with the rest of the sport just to have a shot. To me, that means offering bigger NIL deals than another school, not tampering. I do agree that NIL needs to be checked and that’s a major current issue, but tampering legitimately ruins the sport.

Players are being talked to as if they’re free agents in the middle of the season and these coaches are setting up massive NIL deals for players who are playing for a different school to sway them.

The NCAA needs to crack down on the tampering issue and then I think we’d see less shocking transfers and commitments just days later. We’d see less players hitting the portal the day after their season ends only to commit to a coach who’s a rumored tamperer.

Michigan fans should agree with Izzo’s statement — unless their coach is guilty of this or something?
