Tom Izzo has developed a solid connection with one of the best high school basketball programs in the nation and it’s already yielded two big-time commits for Michigan State.
And a third could be coming in the 2027 class.
Izzo landed four-star point guard Carlos Medlock Jr. in the 2026 class as well as five-star big man Ethan Taylor who both play for Link Academy in Missouri. Their teammate is a top target for Izzo and the Spartans in 2027, and it looks like Michigan State is heavily involved with him.
According to Jamie Shaw of Rivals, Michigan State is involved in the recruitment of five-star point guard Davion Thompson who’s teammates with Taylor and Medlock.
Thompson has reportedly reciprocated interest with Michigan, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas along with Michigan State. The Spartans clearly have a leg up on the competition here by signing two of his teammates in the 2026 class. He could reunite with Taylor and Medlock in East Lansing in 2027. A Medlock-Thompson backcourt would be fun.
Thompson is ranked the No. 24 overall recruit and No. 5 point guard in the 2027 class, according to 247Sports.
We’ll see if Izzo can build another elite recruiting class in 2027 — I’m going to say yes.
Michigan State’s 2027 recruiting board is just getting set up
Michigan State has some big names in its 2026 recruiting class that’s ranked in the top five nationally, and Izzo is looking to sign back-to-back top-five classes with another elite group in 2027.
That’s going to require some five-stars.
Thompson is clearly one of those five-stars and he’s now on the radar for Michigan State fans. There’s no official offer out to Thompson yet from Michigan State, at least according to 247Sports, but I’d expect that to come soon (if it hasn’t already silently). He’s be a heck of a start to the class.
Realistically, Michigan State isn’t going to have many open spots to utilize in 2027, and if that’s the case, I’d expect it to be more like 1-2 guys instead of four. Coen Carr is the only junior on the team and he’s going to be the only one expected to leave after next season.
Michigan State’s 2027 board is pretty bare on 247Sports, but I’d expect that to change in a hurry over the next couple of months as Izzo begins preparation for next year’s roster.
