Tom Izzo’s top priority in the 2027 recruiting class is an obvious one

Michigan State is focusing on one position in particular.

Tom Izzo was dangerously close to losing his All-American point guard to the NBA draft this offseason, but thankfully Michigan State got Jeremy Fears back for at least one more year.

The fact that the Spartans were so close to being down to just one point guard had to make Izzo’s anxiety fly through the roof, and he wants to make sure that never happens again. Fears came back and disaster was avoided and now the Spartans have two really good point guards to aid a 2026-27 national title run.

Like I said, though, Izzo doesn’t want to feel that anxiety of having just one point guard again, so he’s made his priority in the 2027 recruiting class fairly clear: he wants a point guard.

It’s unclear how many spots will be available in the Spartans’ 2026 class, especially with a five-year window potentially getting approved this summer, so he may have anywhere from 1-3 open spots if I’m doing my math right. Fears, Coen Carr, and Anton Bonke are all likely to leave after the 2026-27 season but it’s possible that one or two come back.

In that case, Michigan State would only have 1-2 open spots. Izzo has to use those wisely on an elite point guard. He especially has to target a point guard because it’s likely that Fears is gone. He tested the NBA draft waters this offseason but he was dangerously close to leaving. This feels like the Aaron Henry situation where he left after his junior year because he felt he was more than ready.

Let’s say Fears leaves after the season, that then leaves Carlos Medlock Jr. as the only point guard on the roster. It makes sense to prioritize the position in the 2027 class. Heck, I’d even add two.

Which point guards have caught Tom Izzo’s attention?

Izzo has been reaching out to several top point guards in the 2027 class already and he’s been in attendance for some of their games over the past month.

Five-star point guard Nasir Anderson named Michigan State as one of the teams that had been reaching out to him the most. I doubt the Spartans have much of a shot here for the 6-foot-4 ninth-ranked prospect in the class, but Izzo has at least gauged his interest.

Four-star Cayden Daughtry is another point guard that has caught Izzo’s attention. He’s being looked at by a number of top schools and he’s the No. 18 recruit in the country.

Jaxson Davis is another name to watch. The No. 42 recruit in the class seems the most likely to become a Spartan just based on the teams involved and the fact that he’s from the Midwest. Davis is the No. 11 point guard in the 2027 class.

There was also four-star Davion Thompson who was teammates with Ethan Taylor and Medlock at Link Academy. Unfortunately, Michigan State didn’t make his top four.

Izzo has either reached out or targeted four of the top 11 point guards in the 2027 class.

It’s no secret that he’s looking for a potential Fears replacement.
