Tom Izzo dodges major bullet with former 5-star PG target spurning Michigan

Obviously Tom Izzo wishes he could’ve landed him.

Tom Izzo’s focus in the 2027 class is pretty obvious: he wants an elite point guard.

There’s been talk about Michigan State being involved with several elite point guards in the 2027 class, but one that many fans were hoping would end up in the green and white recently cut the Spartans from his final list.

Five-star point guard Davion Thompson, a Link Academy teammate of Carlos Medlock Jr. and Ethan Taylor, already had ties to Michigan State with his teammates entering their freshman seasons in East Lansing, but he trimmed his list to four recently with Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Baylor, and Michigan making the cut. The absolute worst-case scenario would be if the No. 22 recruit in the country picked Michigan — or really any Big Ten program for that matter — and haunted the Spartans for 1-2 years.

Thankfully, Izzo dodged a bullet on Wednesday night as Thompson committed to John Calipari and Arkansas.

Honestly, how can you blame Thompson for picking Coach Cal and the Razorbacks? Calipari has sent countless point guards to the NBA and his most recent, Darius Acuff, is going to be a lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft after just one seasons at Arkansas. Acuff, too, picked Arkansas over early interest from Michigan State.

Thompson will be the latest elite point guard to play for Calipari and I wouldn’t be shocked if he ends up being one of the best. This is a guy that I really wanted Michigan State to land.

At least he’s not going to Michigan.

Tom Izzo has other PG targets on the mind

Missing on Thompson and not even having a chance on decision day definitely hurt, but Izzo is going to have some other options.

Five-star top-10 recruit Nasir Anderson said that Michigan State was in contact with him earlier this spring. He’s about the longest of long-shots for the Spartans so I wouldn’t hold my breath, but this shows how serious Izzo is about landing an elite point guard to replace Jeremy Fears.

He’s also checked out Cayden Daughtry, another five-star point guard, who is hearing from several major programs. He’s the No. 18 recruit in the class and the No. 4 point guard — just ahead of Thompson.

Lastly, the guy who I think Michigan State probably has the best shot with is four-star Jaxson Davis. He’s the No. 11 point guard in the class and he’s ranked 42nd nationally. He’s spoken about Michigan State’s interest in him, and vice versa, recently. I fully expect Izzo to go full-court press on one of these guys before all the best point guards in the class get scooped up.
