Tom Izzo has made some top schools lists and has offered several scholarships over the past month, or so, and the Michigan State head coach just added another name to his 2027 big board.
According to his official account, 6-foot-10 center Kamsi Awaka was just offered by Izzo on Tuesday which comes a few weeks after it was initially reported that the Spartans were showing interest.
Izzo had been eying Awaka for some time, but he finally extended the offer this week that the 6-foot-10, 250-pound New Jersey-native was waiting for. He already holds almost a dozen offers, according to his 247Sports profile, including some big ones from the likes of Arizona, UConn, and Florida. Those three look to be the leaders for his services, but Michigan State threw a wrench into those plans.
Awaka has yet to plan any official visits but I would assume that Michigan State will get one now that the Spartans have officially extended that offer and they’re going to be pushing hard for either him or Jaydn Jenkins. Izzo is determined to land one of his elite center targets.
The New Jersey-based prospect is ranked the No. 52 overall recruit and No. 8 center in the 2027 class. He’s also the state’s top overall recruit.
It’s going to be a battle to land Awaka over the three big contenders who’ve already established relationships with the four-star.
Izzo can’t go wrong with either him or Jenkins in his 2027 class.
Michigan State has an ideal 2027 big board
After the Awaka offer, Michigan State is officially up to nine scholarships extended in the 2027 class and only two of those are to centers. Awaka and Jenkins will have to race to commit.
The big board that Izzo has put together for 2027 is looking really impressive right now, though.
Izzo has three elite point guards on the table in Antonio Pemberton, Jaxson Davis, and Aaron Britt Jr. as well as an elite combo guard in Joshua Tyson. The Spartans have made the cut for three of those guys already and Izzo has made it clear that he plans on landing an elite point guard. Another positive development about his offers is the fact that none of them seem unattainable.
In the past, Izzo has gone after some big names but loses out in the end because the bag he offers apparently isn’t big enough, but he’s offering guys in the 30-60 range in this class almost exclusively.
That’s not a bad thing.
Outside of Jayon Connor and Kingston Thomas, Michigan State has only offered guys who range from 30 to 60 in the national rankings. Izzo has a legitimate chance with each one of his targets and it’s nice to feel like he could have his pick of the litter.
The ideal three-man class? It’s tough to say, but I’d go Pemberton, Asa Montgomery, and either Jenkins or Awaka. That would really crush it for the Hall of Famer.
