To begin the season, Michigan State was one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the country. The Spartans couldn’t seem to get anything to fall early on, but they slowly improved as the season progressed.
The Spartans became one of the most improved shooting teams in the Big Ten, going from well below 30 percent from three to open the year all the way up to around 36 percent two games into the NCAA Tournament. That’s a number that shouldn’t be considered by anyone to be “bad” but that’s the narrative that’s been spreading like wildfire.
All season, we’ve been told that Michigan State is a poor shooting team only to find out that the Spartans are the third-best shooting team left in the field over the past 10 games.
A graphic that was posted on X on Monday proved that the media has been lying to us.

Out of all the teams left in the field, Michigan State has the third-highest 3-point percentage with a decent sample size. The Spartans are shooting over 40 percent from three over the past 10 games, and they’re over 40 percent through their first two NCAA Tournament games.
In fact, Michigan State went 10-for-20 against North Dakota State in the first round and then hit 11-of-26 against Louisville to advance to the Sweet 16.
Through two tournament games, Michigan State is shooting about 45.7% from deep. That’s an impressive number for a team that has been labeled “bad” at shooting threes.
Michigan State’s shooters are perking up at the right time
Contrary to popular belief, Michigan State does have some solid shooters like Kur Teng, Trey Fort, Jordan Scott, and Jaxon Kohler. All of them are starting to perk up.
Here’s how the Spartan shooters are faring from deep through two NCAA Tournament wins:
Kur Teng: 3-for-7
Trey Fort: 4-for-8
Coen Carr: 3-for-6
Jaxon Kohler: 5-for-13
Jordan Scott: 2-for-4
Jeremy Fears Jr.: 2-for-6
All of the Spartans’ normal shooters are making at least 33 percent of their 3-point attempts through the first two rounds which is huge. Plus, seeing Fort begin to break out is huge for the Final Four hopes.
You always want to have your guys playing their best basketball in March, and the Spartans’ top shooters are doing just that on the offensive end.
