The final piece for the defense of the Big Ten title was added to the Michigan State basketball roster on Friday afternoon as Denham Wojcik announced he would be joining the Spartans as a transfer.
The Harvard guard transfer, former Crimson captain, and son of associate head coach Doug Wojcik joins a team that thought it had already sewn up its roster, but he can provide some solid depth for the Spartans in the backcourt. The addition wasn't exactly earth-shattering, by any means, but he has some experience as a Division 1 starter and that's all you can really ask for.
Now that Wojcik is joining the roster and Jase Richardson didn't announce a surprise return at the last second, the team looks set to head into the summer as a unit.
So how does the final roster look?
Let's start with the backcourt:
Jeremy Fears Jr.
Trey Fort
Kur Teng
Divine Ugochukwu
Denham Wojcik
That's not a bad group of guards and while it's not quite as experienced and star-studded as the 2024-25 backcourt, it has potential. Fears should be much improved with a full, healthy offseason under his belt, Fort has the potential to be a go-to scorer, Teng's potential is through the roof as a shooter and offensive threat, Ugochukwu has valuable experience for a backup point, and Wojcik also has some solid experience as a former Harvard captain.
This now gives Michigan State three point guard options while the shooting guard spot has a couple of plus shooters who can score.
Now let's look at the frontcourt:
Coen Carr
Jaxon Kohler
Kaleb Glenn
Carson Cooper
Jesse McCulloch
Jordan Scott
Cam Ward
Michigan State has a few guys who could play on the wing like Carr, Glenn, Scott, and even Ward, but the post looks like it's going to be a strength this season with plenty of length and athleticism. We could see the Spartans utilize big lineups as well as small-ball units. The possibilities are endless.
Overall, what do I think of the roster?
I do believe the 2024-25 roster, on paper, was better, but this group may just have more potential. The Spartans have some younger guys who are inexperienced who can rise up and exceed expectations (Ward, Scott, Ugochukwu, McCulloch, Teng) but there are also some experienced vets who should be able to carry the load when things get rough (Glenn, Fort, Fears, Kohler, Cooper, Carr).
The ceiling for this team is the same as last year's based on potential alone, but they all need to buy in and be as close as the 2024-25 squad was. Team chemistry will be huge again.
