Social media is still buzzing on Monday morning following one of the most shocking trades of the offseason so far as Miles Bridges was dealt by the Charlotte Hornets to a fellow Spartan.
Mat Ishbia and the Phoenix Suns were able to put together a package that the Hornets agreed to, sending a future first-round pick, Royce O’Neal, and Grayson Allen to Charlotte in exchange for Bridges and a couple of draft picks.
I don’t think anyone saw this coming, but both the Suns and the Hornets have clear offseason plans in mind. Charlotte is blowing things up after trading LaMelo Ball earlier in the week as well as Bridges while accumulating picks and assets. Phoenix is building a roster that could contend for an NBA title, adding Bridges who has averaged at least 17 points in four straight seasons.
NBA experts believe that the Suns are setting themselves up for a big splash in free agency with this move, freeing up some cap space. It’s also rumored that the Suns’ goal is to extend Bridges.
Although Bridges has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons over the past few years following a domestic violence incident, he’s been giving a second chance by the NBA whether he deserves it or not. He will need to keep his act clean while he’s in Phoenix because he’s going to be a huge piece of the puzzle for Ishbia.
The Suns will need to add another big piece or two this offseason if they want to truly contend in the Western Conference, but adding a scoring threat like Bridges is a good start.
Miles Bridges desperately needs a redemption arc
This change of scenery might be good for Bridges who watched as his reputation went up in flames due to a domestic incident with the mother of his child.
Although he’s since apologized for what happened and vowed to be better, people want to see action. They want to see the old Bridges return — the Bridges that was known as a humble superstar in East Lansing and who Tom Izzo considered one of the more special players that he’s coached.
Now that he’s off to Phoenix, he can get a fresh start with a new organization and work towards bettering his image.
We already know that he’s a good player and he’s one of the better athletes in the league, but he needs to be a positive role model off the court, too.
Ishbia getting ahold of him might do wonders for Bridges’ redemption arc.
I want to see nothing but positive Miles Bridges headlines from this point forward.
