Bad news struck the Michigan State football program yet again on Friday afternoon as three-star linebacker Braylon Hodge, who had been surging in the rankings, announced his decommitment.

Hodge, a rising three-star who recently got bumped up to four-star status, had committed to the Spartans over the summer, but his recent trend upward caused him to explore other options, and a recent visit to Michigan felt like the final straw in Michigan State’s active recruitment of him.

The talented linebacker was seen on his Michigan official visit flashing the “block M” hand gesture, and Michigan State fans didn’t exactly take too kindly to that.

It felt like a slap in the face.

So when he decommitted on Friday, it wasn’t a huge surprise.

Hodge had been hinting at a decommitment for weeks, and then his recent visit to Michigan was kind of the determining factor that he wasn’t actually fully committed to the Spartans. He’s since narrowed his list of options down to three programs: Michigan, Texas, and Oregon.

I’d kind of be shocked if he didn’t wind up at Oregon to play for Dan Lanning — though he did love his trip to Michigan last weekend.

Best reactions to Hodge decommitting from Michigan State football

Social media was set ablaze by Hodge’s decision to decommit and focus on Michigan, among a couple of other top programs. Here were some of the best reactions:

The accounts above are right, the vibes are a little off right now with the 2026 recruiting class after two decommitments this week, but it’s up to Jonathan Smith and Co. to right the ship, starting with UCLA on Saturday afternoon.

Winning cures all, especially on the recruiting trail.

If Michigan State wants to be serious about winning big, it’ll have to hold on to recruits like Hodge and Tyren Wortham who bolted at the first sign of outside interest.
