College basketball hasn’t even started yet, but Michigan State fans are getting hit with hoops news left and right lately. It’s the middle of football season, but the hoops news has been refreshing, especially after the USC loss.

What could be even better than knowing that Michigan State is already practicing and Big Ten Media Days are next week? How about landing a second commit in the 2026 class in the form of Julius Avent?

Tom Izzo has been working hard on the recruiting trail, and he landed one of the top point guards in the 2026 class in Carlos Medlock Jr. this summer. While that was arguably his top priority, he now has to fill out the rest of his class, which could be somewhere around four recruits.

That’s where Avent comes into play.

The four-star power forward shared that he would be making his college decision on Wednesday afternoon at around 2:30 p.m. ET. He’s down to Michigan State, Seton Hall, and Xavier, and he’s a New Jersey kid, so do the Spartans really stand a chance?

Predicting where Julius Avent will commit

I’m just reading the tea leaves here, but all the signs are pointing to the Spartans.

  • Izzo just stopped by to see him last week
  • Of his three finalists, he’s only visited Michigan State and Xavier; he canceled his trip to Seton Hall this weekend
  • Avent was just on campus on Aug. 30
  • Recruiting experts were teasing good news for MSU on Tuesday

All of this combined makes me believe that the Spartans are going to get their guy on Wednesday afternoon. While this isn’t the big name like Ethan Taylor, Jasiah Jervis, or Maximo Adams that fans are hoping to hear commit to Michigan State, he’ll still be a more-than-solid addition to the class.

Avent is ranked the No. 78 overall recruit in the class, and he’s an athletic, versatile big who can stretch the floor. He’s incredibly skilled at all three levels of scoring. This would be a great get.

I’m picking Izzo and the Spartans to win this one.
